Intuition Is a Skill, Not a Gift

Some people have a really hard time with their intuition. And I get it — maybe my background of having dreams that actually spoke to me made it feel more natural. But I can see now why for most people, it isn’t so easy.

It feels Zig-Zaggy for some. (Benjakitti Park)

That said? I’m genuinely happy to see that more and more people are making the effort to tune in.

Some call it a gut feel. That sense in your body — somewhere in your torso, your chest, your stomach — that just knows. It says yes or no before your brain has even caught up. And of course, I’d still say the best approach is to have your intuition and your logic working together. One doesn’t replace the other.

But here’s the thing about intuition that I think trips people up: we expect to get it right the first time.

Think about when you were learning to walk. You fell. A lot. But you didn’t decide you weren’t a “walking person.” You just got up and tried again. Or think about multiplication. You didn’t come out of the womb knowing that 7 x 7 is 49. You had to use your fingers. You miscounted. You got it wrong before you got it right.

Intuition is the same.

The more you practice — noticing sensations, sitting with them, checking afterward whether they were accurate — the sharper it gets. Over time, what starts as a vague, fuzzy feeling in your body becomes something you can actually read. You start to tell the difference between the feeling of guilt, the feeling of excitement that’s tinged with fear, or the specific weight of a decision that isn’t yours to make.

You won’t get it right every time. That’s not failure — that’s practice.
